Tehran has warned of retaliatory attacks on key energy infrastructure in the Gulf if the US attacks Iran again. Iran has held high-level diplomatic talks with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Pakistan on the issue. The British news agency Reuters reported this information in a report on Thursday (July 6) citing five sources familiar with the matter.
\nThe sources claimed that Tehran became active after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iran’s energy networks and infrastructure on July 28. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar and the army chief of Pakistan.
\nDuring the talks, Araghchi called on Trump to influence him to prevent new attacks on US allies in the Gulf. At the same time, he warned that if Iran is attacked, US bases and energy installations in the Gulf could also be targeted in Iran’s retaliatory attacks. According to an Iranian official, any new US attack could also target the Gulf region’s power grid, oil refineries, water supply systems, transportation networks and oil fields.
\nAccording to the source, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke to Trump after Iran’s warning and called for a halt to military action, a return to talks and a diplomatic solution. Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia have also called on Washington to resume talks with Tehran. However, Saudi Arabia has also said that any attack on its territory will be met with military retaliation.
\nMeanwhile, the attack on Saudi Arabia’s Aramco oil facilities in 2019 is also considered important behind Iran’s warning. That attack temporarily shut down more than half of the country’s crude oil production. Tehran believes that the threat to endanger the energy infrastructure of the Gulf region could put pressure on the United States and its Arab allies not to carry out new attacks.
\nIt is worth noting that on August 2, Trump said that he would cancel plans to attack Iran if a deal was reached quickly. However, the main obstacle to these negotiations has been the US’s reluctance to reach an agreement that Iran can present as its own victory.
