Former BNP senior joint convener Nafiz Ahmed Khan Raju (45) was attacked in Khoksa of Kushtia district. Several cocktail blasts also took place during this time. Panic has spread in the area after this attack just 50 yards away from the police station.
\nThe attack took place in front of his own house in Khoksa Thanapara area at 10:40 pm yesterday, Wednesday (August 5). Nafiz Ahmed Raju is the son of the late Anwar Ahmed Tantari Khan of the Thanapara area of \u200b\u200bthe municipality. He is the former joint convener of the upazila BNP.
\nLocals said that when he reached his house on a motorcycle at around 10:40 pm and got down in front of the gate, 4 to 5 unidentified persons asked to know his identity. When he gave his identification, the attackers attacked him with sharp weapons and seriously injured him. It is learnt that he was also hit with a hammer during this time.
\nWhen relatives and locals came forward from inside the house after Raju screamed, the attackers opened fire with shotguns at the gate of the house and quickly left the scene. The locals rescued him in a seriously injured condition and admitted him to the Upazila Health Complex. Eyewitnesses claim that the attackers fired at least 16 rounds. Later, relatives rescued the bloody Raju and first took him to the Upazila Health Complex. When his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital at night.
\nDr. Anwar Hossain, a doctor in the emergency department of the Upazila Health Complex, said that the injured person had a sharp weapon injury on his right leg. In addition, it is initially believed that two bones in his right hand and three fingers on his left hand were broken. He has been sent to the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital for advanced treatment.
\nNafiz Ahmed Khan Raju alleged that the attack was carried out with the intention of killing him in a planned manner to prevent him from standing as a candidate in the upcoming municipal elections. He claimed that the administration was informed about the security situation in advance, but no effective action was taken.
\nEyewitness to the incident and former women vice-president of Khokhsa Upazila Parishad Israt Jahan Puram said that after hearing Raju’s screams, she came outside and saw the attackers firing and exploding cocktails. When Raju took shelter inside the house to save his life, the attackers opened fire at the gate. She alleged that the police took some time to reach the spot. Khokhsa Police Station OC Molla Zakir Hossain said that a case has been filed in the attack on Nafiz Ahmed Raju.
