Patuakhali district Awami League member and former vice-president of Sadar Upazila Parishad Md. Mizanur Rahman Khan alias Monir Khan (48), who was arrested in multiple cases, has died. He died while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday (August 5).
\nEarlier, a picture of him wearing handcuffs while dying while undergoing treatment in the ICU had created a storm of discussion and criticism across the country. Monir Khan’s relatives claim that after the picture went viral, bail was granted one by one in all the cases against him, but he could not return alive from jail or hospital as his physical condition did not improve; finally, he was permanently released through death.
\nThe deceased Mizanur Rahman Monir Khan is the son of the late Abdul Khalek Khan of Bahalgachia village in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila. He is the former general secretary of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila Jubo League, former organizing secretary of the district Jubo League and has served as the vice-president of the Bangladesh Rural Development and Cooperative Federation for a long time.
\nAccording to local sources, he has been in hiding since the change of government on August 5, 2024. On the evening of September 14, 2025, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him from the Mintu Road area of \u200b\u200bthe capital. There were a total of 8 cases against him, of which 6 were in Dhaka and 2 in Patuakhali Sadar Police Station. After serving about 11 months in Dhaka and Patuakhali jails, he was detained in one case after another on the pretext of a hearing. His wife, Mosammad Salma Jahan, chairman of Kalikapur Union of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila and organizing secretary of the district Krishak League, was also arrested with her husband and kept in jail for several days.
\nHis wife Salma Jahan said that Monir Khan suffered a stroke while in prison on June 9. As his condition was critical, he was sent from jail to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. When his condition deteriorated further, he was taken to the ICU of the Critical Care Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on June 14 and kept on life support for two days. After being treated in the ICU for about two months, he died on Wednesday afternoon. Salma Jahan further said that while he was in the ICU, he got bail in his latest case on July 30. He had earlier got bail in the remaining 7 cases. After a fierce debate after his picture wearing handcuffs went viral, the police finally removed the handcuffs, but by then his health had seriously deteriorated. Abdul Kalam Azad, the deceased’s uncle, said that he will be buried in the family graveyard after the funeral prayers at the Patuakhali Sadar Upazila Ground on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
