\nThe source said on Thursday (July 23) that the government and the ruling party BNP are taking a decision on the nomination of a new president from the top level. If the nomination is delayed, Speaker Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will serve as the acting president. There is no doubt that the current President Shahabuddin is resigning very soon.
\nThe government source said that it is not yet known who the next president will be. However, usually someone trusted by the ruling party is appointed to this position.
\nAnother important source in the government told us that the third session of the National Parliament will be held next Sunday, September 6. The next president of the country will be elected there. The source said that if President Shahabuddin resigns, the current Speaker Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will become the acting president. Neither of the two reliable sources agreed to reveal their names.
\nThe president may resign due to illness. Although President Md. No official statement or announcement has been received from Bangabhaban or the government regarding Sahabuddin’s resignation. However, a source close to Bangabhaban said that the President himself has indicated to his subordinates that he will leave Bangabhaban soon. According to the source, he will take a few days of rest after resigning. He may also go abroad for medical treatment.
\nIt is worth noting that Md. Sahabuddin took oath as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. He was elected unopposed on the nomination of the Awami League. According to the constitution, his five-year term is scheduled to end in April 2028.
\nThe political situation in the country changed dramatically after the fall of the Awami League government through a student-mass uprising on August 5, 2024. At that time, fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. Later, Md. Sahabuddin served as President in important political processes, including the dissolution of parliament and the formation of an interim government.
\nSince the mass uprising, student leaders have been demanding the removal of the President. Organizations associated with the July Movement have held various programs, including a siege of Bangabhaban, demanding his resignation. However, the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus did not take any initiative to remove him. It is said that the then main political party, BNP, did not demand Shahabuddin’s resignation for fear of a constitutional vacuum.
\nHowever, on December 12, 2025, during the interim government, Shahabuddin said that he wanted to resign mid-term after the February elections. At that time, he also said that he felt humiliated by the behavior of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. After the BNP-led government came to power, Shahabuddin said in an interview with a newspaper on February 24 this year that he would remain in charge if the government wanted him, otherwise he would resign voluntarily. According to the constitution, if the president resigns, the Speaker of the National Assembly will serve as the acting president until a new president is elected.
\nArticle 54 of the Constitution states that if the office of the President falls vacant or if he is unable to perform his duties due to absence, illness or any other reason, the Speaker shall serve as the Acting President until a new President is elected.
\nAccording to Article 123 of the Constitution, if the office of the President falls vacant due to resignation, death or removal, a new President must be elected within the next 90 days. The President is elected by the votes of the members of Parliament. Since the ruling BNP has a majority in Parliament, the person nominated by the party is expected to be elected President.
\nAlthough the BNP formed the government through the national elections, they did not immediately take any decision on changing the President. Although there have been various discussions in the political arena about the future of the President since the change of government, neither the government nor the BNP have ever publicly demanded his resignation.
\nIf President Md. Shahabuddin finally resigns, another important change will take place in the country’s highest constitutional post after the popular uprising and the next national elections. At the same time, for the first time since the formation of the government, BNP will have the opportunity to nominate a candidate of its choice as president.
