Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has said that some plainclothes police have beaten up students protesting in Delhi, India, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to a report by The Hindu,
\nThousands of protesters gathered in the Indian capital New Delhi on Monday (July 20) demanding the resignation of the Education Minister and major reforms in the examination system. At least 180 people were injured in clashes between protesting students and police.
\nToday, Tuesday (July 21), he said, “No one could have imagined that any government after independence would treat the people like this. Just like Hitler formed his own private army, yesterday we saw many people in plainclothes beating up the protesters.”
\nAkhilesh Yadav also alleged that the BJP government is unable to force its ministers to resign. He claimed, “The government knows that if ministers are pressured to resign, they can leak various secrets of this government.” Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse protesters who tried to march towards Parliament yesterday. It was one of the biggest road protests in Delhi in nearly five years.
\nDelhi Police said 178 people were injured in the clashes, including 118 police personnel, including senior officers. Police said a section of the protesters were “unruly and violently behaving”. At the same time, they said that about 60 protesters were also injured. On the other hand, the organizers of the movement condemned the “excessive use of force” by the police and claimed that hundreds of protesters were injured.
\nCJP leader Ashutosh Ranka told AFP, “This is a shameful day in the history of Indian democracy. Ordinary students who came to protest for their just demands were brutally beaten up by the Delhi Police.” He added that despite a meeting with Union Minister J.P. Nadda on Monday, the government has yet to respond positively to their demands.
\nIt is worth noting that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET), which was recently cancelled due to question paper leaks, was re-conducted under tight security. Around 22 lakh candidates appeared in it.
