US President Donald Trump made a strange and uncomfortable scene during the historic moment of Spain’s World Cup victory celebration. Although guests usually leave the stage after the trophy is handed over to the world champions at the MetLife Stadium, Donald Trump did not.
\nWhen Spanish captain Rodri went to the center of the stage with his teammates to present the trophy, Trump stood right in the middle of the champions. As a result, the US president also got a place in one of the best and most publicized photos in football history; the first celebration of the World Cup victory with the Spanish footballers.
\nHowever, Trump’s presence on stage was not a surprise. On June 23, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the two of them would jointly present the trophy to the winners, breaking with the tradition of 2018 and 2022. However, although the US president was supposed to leave the stage after the trophy was handed over according to protocol, he stood there smiling and posing for the camera.
\nTelevision and camera footage showed the Spanish players looking at each other and hesitating slightly before lifting the trophy. Although no one directly asked Trump to leave the stage, the contrast in the surroundings was clear. On the one hand, while the footballers were hugging each other for a historic photo, the US president stood among them smiling.
\nInternational media outlets have called the situation “uncomfortable” and it has also been criticized on social media. Critics claim that while it is okay for Trump to be present at the awards ceremony according to FIFA rules, it is against tradition and custom for him to remain where the players are celebrating privately.
\nPresident Trump, of course, knew very well what the impact of his position could be, because exactly a year ago he did almost the same thing on the same field. After Chelsea won the 2025 Club World Cup, Trump took to the stage to celebrate with the players and presented the trophy to captain Reece James. Reece James later revealed that they had been told the president would be leaving the stage. Another Chelsea star, Cole Palmer, also admitted that the players were confused to see Trump standing there. A repeat of the same incident a year later proved that it was not due to a lack of protocol. The two words heard from the gallery as he entered the pitch at the start of the final match and his almost complete absence from the stadium’s giant screen throughout the match seemed to be erased in a flash on the awards stage.
