While foundries and secondary steelmakers limited purchases to immediate requirements amid sluggish construction activity, constrained spot supply enabled producers to maintain domestic offers without any significant price correction. Healthy export enquiries and committed overseas shipments continued to support producer sentiment despite muted domestic buying.<\/p>\n<p>Overseas enquiries keep export sentiment positive:<\/p>\n<p>Export demand continues to be the primary market driver. According to market participants, a major eastern India-based producer recently concluded export deals for around 150,000 t to the USA, Myanmar, Vietnam and other destinations at around USD 415-435\/t FOB. In addition, several sizeable domestic transactions in eastern India have further tightened material availability for July-August.<\/p>\n<p>Market sources indicated that overseas demand, particularly from the United States, remains supportive, while eastern Indian exporters continue to receive multiple export enquiries that are under commercial negotiations. Although many discussions are yet to translate into firm bookings, they continue to strengthen market sentiment and encourage producers to prioritise export commitments over spot domestic sales.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. import dependence continues to support Indian pig iron exports:<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. remains a key export destination for Indian pig iron, supported by its structural reliance on imports. Domestic pig iron production is limited and largely consumed internally, leaving steelmakers dependent on overseas suppliers to bridge the supply gap.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 70% of U.S. crude steel produced through electric arc furnaces (EAFs), pig iron continues to play an important role alongside ferrous scrap in maintaining metallic quality and steel chemistry. Domestic production meets only a small share of overall demand, keeping import requirements elevated. This structural deficit is expected to sustain export opportunities for Indian pig iron producers and continue supporting overseas shipments in the near term.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic demand remains subdued as supply tightens:<\/p>\n<p>On the domestic front, demand from foundries and secondary steelmakers remains seasonally weak due to the monsoon-led slowdown in construction activity. However, reduced domestic buying has been largely offset by export-led supply absorption and planned maintenance at select plants, preventing any significant downward pressure on prices. Market participants also indicated that one leading eastern producer is substantially committed through August, leaving only limited spot volumes available for domestic customers.<\/p>\n<p>Trade data reflects the export momentum, with India shipping around 0.21 million tonnes of pig iron in May, followed by approximately 0.12 million tonnes in June, with the USA remaining the largest export destination. Consequently, BigMint&#8217;s Durgapur steel-grade pig iron assessment has remained broadly stable at around INR 37,800-38,000\/t.<\/p>\n<p>Outlook:<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s pig iron market is expected to remain stable with a firm undertone over the coming weeks. Healthy export enquiries, committed overseas shipments and maintenance-related supply constraints are likely to keep domestic availability tight.
