Higher Turkish scrap demand towards March and the second quarter, triggered by disruptions in global semi-finished steel trade following the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, supported a surge by reducing the availability of competitively priced Asian billets and encouraging mills to increase scrap purchases.

In May, exports increased 16% m-o-m to 1.14 mnt from 0.98 mnt in April, recovering after April shipments declined sharply from 1.36 mnt in March. The strong rebound in March offset weaker exports recorded in January and February. Turkish mills also returned to the deep-sea scrap market after inventories declined, while firmer finished long steel prices temporarily improved buying sentiment before procurement slowed again towards the end of April.

Domestic demand supportive:

The US scrap market remained well supported during 5MCY’26 by healthy domestic steelmaking activity. Crude steel production increased 8% y-o-y to 35.5 mnt, driving a 12% rise in scrap consumption to 26.27 mnt, while scrap generation also grew 12% y-o-y to 24.07 mnt, reflecting higher steel output and improved scrap availability.

Higher steel production, sustained EAF utilisation and mill operating rates above 80% continued to underpin domestic scrap demand. Tight availability of prime scrap also encouraged some flat steel producers to supplement metallics with imported pig iron, while resilient domestic steel production helped maintain healthy scrap consumption despite comfortable availability of obsolete scrap.

Despite firm domestic demand, export volumes remained resilient due to stronger overseas buying, particularly from Turkiye and Mexico.

Additionally, US steel imports increased in April, driven by higher inflows of semi-finished and finished steel products, reflecting resilient manufacturing activity and steady steel demand despite ongoing tariff-related restrictions.

Export prices strengthen:

US ferrous scrap export prices remained above year-ago levels during 5MCY’26, supported by resilient overseas demand despite higher prices. Stronger buying from Turkiye during March-April played a key role in supporting export values, as mills replenished raw material inventories amid improved steel production and favourable import economics. Relatively tight global scrap availability also helped keep prices elevated.

However, market sentiment softened towards the end of the second quarter. Seasonal weakness in finished steel demand, slower construction activity and cautious mill procurement across several importing regions started to weigh on export prices. While Turkish demand continues to provide some support, weaker buying from Asian destinations has limited further upside, resulting in a gradual correction in export prices.

During 5MCY’26 shredded scrap averaged $380/t FOB US East Coast, up 8% y-o-y from $352/t. HMS (80:20) averaged $360/t FOB, also up 8% y-o-y from $332/t.

Country-wise exports:

Turkiye largest buyer:US ferrous scrap exports to Turkiye declined 8% y-o-y to 1.43 mnt from 1.55 mnt. Despite the decline, Turkiye remained the largest export destination. March shipments strengthened as mills replenished depleted inventories following disruptions in global billet trade, although buying slowed later as domestic rebar prices softened and mills returned to need-based procurement.

Mexico records strongest growth: Scrap exports to Mexico surged 80% y-o-y to 0.88 mnt from 0.49 mnt, supported by robust steel production, higher EAF utilisation, robust cross-border trade and competitive US scrap prices. Mexican mills increased imports to manage raw material costs despite lingering uncertainty surrounding automotive demand.

Canada strengthens cross-border trade:Shipments to Canada increased 54% y-o-y to 0.40 mnt from 0.26 mnt, reflecting healthy North American steel production, firm scrap demand and continued integration of regional supply chains.

Asian buying remains weak:Exports to Bangladesh declined 54% y-o-y to 0.31 mnt from 0.68 mnt, reflecting weak steel consumption, LC constraints, cautious mill procurement and intermittent buying amid volatile international scrap prices.

Shipments to India fell by 57% y-o-y to 0.22 mnt from 0.51 mnt, as poor import economics, competitive alternative raw materials prices, labour shortages during the harvest season and election-related disruptions weighed on imports.

US scrap imports rise:

US ferrous scrap imports increased 6% y-o-y to 2.20 mnt during 5MCY’26. While overall import volumes remained broadly stable, sourcing patterns shifted.

Canada further strengthened its position as the dominant supplier, benefiting from firm US scrap demand and tariff exemptions under the USMCA. Meanwhile, imports from Mexico moderated as expanding domestic EAF steelmaking capacity reduced the country’s exportable scrap surplus.

Pig iron imports decline:

US pig iron imports declined 7% y-o-y to 2.22 mnt during 5MCY’26, reflecting higher domestic scrap availability. However, May imports rebounded m-o-m as tight prime scrap availability encouraged flat steel producers to supplement scrap with imported pig iron.

Brazil remained the largest supplier and further strengthened its share of total imports, while Ukrainian shipments continued to face disruptions owing to ongoing geopolitical challenges.

Outlook:

US ferrous scrap exports are expected to remain supported in the coming months on steady Turkish demand. However, export growth may moderate if global billet availability improves and Asian steel demand remains weak.

Seasonal maintenance outages, extreme summer temperatures, and comfortable scrap inventories could keep export sentiment cautious in the near term, although resilient domestic steel production is expected to provide underlying support.

Domestic consumption is likely to remain firm as EAF-based steelmaking continues operating at elevated utilisation rates. Scrap prices are expected to stay supported by healthy mill demand, while trade flows will continue to be influenced by global steel production trends, freight costs, and geopolitical developments affecting raw material supply chains.

Shipments to Mexico, Canada jump sharply on improved demand Asian buyers remain sidelined amid weaker…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[313

post-71916","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-iron-steel
["https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=1280%2C720&ssl=1?v=1784030831",1280,720,false
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?resize=150%2C150&ssl=1?v=1784030831",150,150,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=300%2C169&ssl=1?v=1784030831",300,169,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=640%2C360&ssl=1?v=1784030831",640,360,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=640%2C360&ssl=1?v=1784030831",640,360,true],"1536x1536":["https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=1280%2C720&ssl=1?v=1784030831",1280,720,true],"2048x2048":["https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=1280%2C720&ssl=1?v=1784030831",1280,720,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?resize=1115%2C715&ssl=1?v=1784030831",1115,715,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?resize=800%2C500&ssl=1?v=1784030831",800,500,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?fit=1024%2C576&ssl=1?v=1784030831",1024,576,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?resize=540%2C340&ssl=1?v=1784030831",540,340,true
https://i0.wp.com/biztrend24.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-95-2.jpg?resize=400%2C250&ssl=1?v=1784030831",400,250,true
Iron &
