\nToday, Monday (July 13), 107 millimeters of rain in just three hours submerged the city’s main roads, lanes and residential areas. In some places, knee-deep water, in others, waist-deep water has accumulated, creating terrible waterlogging. Thousands of people have suffered greatly as water entered their homes. Low-income families, daily wage earners and laborers have been the worst affected.
\nWhen we visited Sadar Hospital at 10 am today, we saw that water had risen in the emergency department and under the beds of patients. Comilla Civil Surgeon Ali Nur Mohammad Bashir Ahmed said that more water is entering the hospital premises from outside. Treatment is being provided in the emergency department through alternative means. If there is no rain, the water will recede.
\nThe city’s Manoharpur, Women’s College Road, Bagan Bari, South Chartha, District School Road, Police Lines, Race Course, North Race Course, Thakurpara, BSCIC Industrial City, Gobindapur, Muradpur and the Chhayabitan area of \u200b\u200bthe suburbs have accumulated the most water. Water has entered various houses, business establishments and low-lying structures. Sewers have overflowed in many places and water mixed with dirt and garbage has spread on the roads, increasing public suffering.
\nAbul Kalam, a drug dealer on Sadar Hospital Road in the city, said that this is the first time in the last 10 years that water has entered the shop. Abdul Latif, a resident of the same area, said that water has entered the ground floor of the house. Water is coming out less through the sewers and drains. Lipi Akhter, an HSC examinee at the Women’s College Center, said that all board exams should have been postponed in such a natural disaster. We have to go to the examination center soaked in the rain.
\nMost of the examinees were seen going to the center in wet clothes during this time. Many people were seen falling into the water on the flooded roads. Parents were also heard expressing their anger over the exams during the rainy season. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the waterlogging, drivers have doubled the fares of rickshaws and battery-powered auto-rickshaws. Ordinary passengers are being forced to pay extra fares. Boats have been arranged for students inside the women’s college center.
\nThe Comilla Meteorological Department said that 138.2 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in the district in the last 24 hours. Of this, 107 millimeters of rain was recorded in just three hours between 9 am on Monday. There is a possibility of more heavy rain throughout the day. Professor Abul Bashar, Principal of Comilla Victoria Government College, said that there are 2,100 examinees from 8 colleges at this center. Although there is water in the field, there is no water inside the houses. The board has ordered to give extra time to those examinees who reached the center a little late.
\nComilla Education Board Chairman Professor Ahsan Parvez said, \u201cWater accumulated in front of the centers and on the roads due to heavy rain in the 6 districts under the board, but no water entered any room. The concerned authorities have been instructed to look into the matter with sympathy for the examinees who reached the centers a little late due to the water. It is hoped that the examinees will not face any problem in taking the exams.\u201d
