At least Tk 91 crore loss has been incurred due to the inundation of around 10,000 fish ponds in various areas of Chittagong due to continuous heavy rains and floods. This information has emerged in a survey published by the Chittagong District Fisheries Department on Saturday (July 11). This damage has occurred in 15 upazilas including Banshkhali, Satkania, Lohagara in Chittagong. Many fish farmers have lost their lives in this.
\nAccording to a survey conducted by the District Fisheries Department, 9,933 ponds, lakes and reservoirs have been flooded so far due to continuous rains and floods for more than a week. In addition, 320 fish ponds have been submerged. The area of \u200b\u200bthe flooded reservoirs is 4,111 hectares. The largest number of reservoirs have been submerged in Banshkhali. Satkania and Lohagara are in second place. More than 3,000 ponds and reservoirs have been submerged in these two upazilas.
\nChittagong District Fisheries Officer Salma Begum said that due to the rains that started on July 5, all the water bodies, fish ponds and reservoirs in 15 upazilas of Chittagong have been submerged. A preliminary survey conducted has shown that the flood has caused damage worth more than Tk 91 crore.
\nAccording to the list, 1,435 water bodies in Patiya, 1,100 in Anwara, 557 in Karnaphuli and 383 in Chandanaishe have been submerged. 3,123 tonnes of large fish have been washed away from these water bodies. 570 tonnes of prawns have been washed away. 6 million tonnes of fish fry have also been washed away.
\nThe survey has shown that the damage in Banshkhali is Tk 41.5 crore, in Satkania Tk 11.0 crore, in Lohagara Tk 8.5 crore, in Karnaphuli Tk 6.0 crore and in Chandanaishe Tk 6.0 crore. In addition, the damage to infrastructure in 15 upazilas is Tk 8.65 lakh. The loss due to the loss of fish alone was 65 crore taka.
