The US launched its second strike on Iran on Saturday (June 27) after a drone attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The latest strike yesterday came at a time when a ceasefire in the Middle East following a June 17 deal between the US and Iran is on the verge of collapse.
\nThe US also launched strikes on Iran last Friday. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the latest strikes were carried out on the orders of its commander in chief. CENTCOM said the strikes were in direct response to Iran’s continued aggression against commercial shipping.
\nThe statement added that US military aircraft targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communications systems, air defense bases, drone storage sites and minelaying capabilities. Explosions were reported near the village of Tahrui in southern Iran and near the port of Sirik. The Syrian port was also targeted in Friday’s US strikes.
\nIranian state media also reported that Qeshm Island was also attacked. Less than two hours after the attack, US President Donald Trump warned in a post on social media that if Iran does not act as Washington expects, Saturday’s attack could be a harbinger of a more intense war.
\nBlaming Iran for its repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement, Trump wrote that it “very likely they will never learn.” He said that there may come a time when we can no longer be rational and are forced to finish the job we have so successfully started militarily. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer be able to survive!<\/p>\n
