Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the army would remain in southern Lebanon \u201cas long as necessary\u201d to ensure the security of residents in the country\u2019s north. At the same time, he reiterated his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, The Dawn reported.
\n\u201cFor the security of the beloved residents of the north and all citizens of Israel, we will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon as long as necessary,\u201d he said on Sunday (June 21). Nothing will distract us from this commitment.\u201d
\nMeanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said, \u201cThere are no restrictions on the activities of the Israeli army in Lebanon to counter threats.\u201d He claimed that the troops are still deployed in the area designated as the security zone and are free to take necessary measures.
\nEarlier, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect last Friday, but at least 20 people were killed in an attack by the occupying forces in Lebanon on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah committed to ceasefire conditions
\nA Hezbollah official told Reuters in an interview that if Israel respects the ceasefire, their side will also respect it. However, he also commented that Israeli forces have no right to move freely in southern Lebanon.
\nHe said that Hezbollah fighters have not attacked Israeli troops since 6:30 pm local time on Saturday. Meanwhile, Israeli army chief Yal Zamir told troops in southern Lebanon that Hezbollah had suffered heavy losses in clashes with Israeli forces and was currently in a “very difficult situation”.
