US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a toll or tariff on the Strait of Hormuz if no final deal is reached with Iran. He claimed that the tariff would be imposed in return for the US’s ‘service’ as the ‘guardian angel’ of the Middle East.
\nOn Saturday, Trump wrote on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’ that there would be no tolls in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire. Even after the 60 days are up, there will be no tolls unless the US imposes them on its own.
\nHe also said that if no deal is made, the US could impose the toll. Trump said that the tariff would be imposed to recover the cost of services provided to Middle Eastern countries in the past, present and future. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the United States and Iran does not explicitly state who will control the Strait of Hormuz in the future.
\nAccording to the agreement, shipping will initially be toll-free for 60 days. During this period, Iran and the Persian Gulf states will determine a new management structure. There are also fears that this could lead to Iran imposing tariffs for using the strait in the future. However, Trump insisted this week that the strait will remain toll-free for the first 60 days and beyond if a final deal is reached.<\/p>\n
