Mamata Banerjee came to national politics through the Congress. But later she broke ties with the Congress and formed her own party and established herself as a political force in West Bengal. Is there any possibility of her returning to her old party now? Political speculation has intensified around this question again. Report: ABP Anand.
\nMamata Banerjee’s political journey has seen many ups and downs; from coming to power in the state in an alliance with the Congress to almost removing that party from state politics later. After leaving the Congress in 1998, she formed a separate party and created a new equation in national politics. Later, she became a minister in the NDA government.
\nThen in 2011, she came to power in West Bengal for the first time in an alliance with the Trinamool Congress. However, that relationship did not last long. Now, as he and Abhishek Banerjee are meeting and discussing with the Congress top brass, a large section of the Pradesh Congress is expressing anger. Some are taking a moderate stance.
\nThe Congress had won the Sagardighi assembly seat in Murshidabad in alliance with the CPI(M). However, later the Trinamool pulled the lone MLA, Byron Biswas, towards them. Similarly, in the context of party-shift politics, they also captured the Congress-run Jhalda municipality.
\nIn the 2015 by-elections, the Trinamool could not win any of the seven municipalities in Murshidabad district. But later, the opposition camp broke and one by one all the municipalities came under their control. Even the Congress-controlled district councils went into the hands of the opposition. Now, is Mamata Banerjee walking the path of new closeness with the Congress? This is the question that is doing the rounds in political circles.
\nLast Tuesday (June 9), Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath. Then on Wednesday, Abhishek Banerjee met Rahul Gandhi there. However, there has been a strong reaction in the Pradesh Congress Committee. A section of them is clearly claiming that there is no realistic possibility of her returning to the Congress.
