The Water Development Board (PDB) has started a campaign to recover illegally occupied canals in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The canal recovery operation was conducted in the Barpa area of \u200b\u200bthe upazila on Tuesday (June 9) afternoon.
\nUnder the supervision of PDB Narayanganj region Executive Engineer Shuvo Ahmed and under the leadership of Executive Magistrate Marjanur Rahman, a part of the canal in the possession of various industrial institutions and individuals, including Majumdar Group and ASBRM Steel Mills, has been recovered in the Barpa area. At that time, the illegal structures built on the canal were demolished and necessary measures were taken to maintain normal water flow.
\nThe government agency said that out of the approximately 13 kilometers of canal under their jurisdiction in Rupganj, about 7 kilometers have been illegally occupied by various individuals, including 12 large industrial institutions. As a result, water drainage is disrupted during the rainy season and about 30,000 families in at least 20 villages of the upazila are facing waterlogging.
\nPAUBO Executive Engineer Shuvo Ahmed said that a large part of the canal under the jurisdiction of the Water Development Board in Rupganj has been illegally occupied for a long time. This is obstructing the normal flow of water in the canal and causing widespread waterlogging during the rainy season. As per government instructions, this campaign has been started to restore the occupied canal and this campaign will continue until the entire canal is freed from encroachment. Meanwhile, Rupganj Executive Magistrate Marjanur Rahman said that this campaign is being conducted in Rupganj as part of the government’s ongoing canal and reservoir restoration program. Necessary legal action will also be taken against the illegal encroachers.
