However, trading activity remained selective, with buyers across the region questioning the sustainability of current price levels.<\/p>\n<p>The market&#8217;s tone has improved noticeably over the past two weeks, but the rally remains largely supply-driven rather than demand-led. While China continues to provide support through seasonal power demand, market participants report that buying activity has become less aggressive, with many consumers remaining adequately stocked.<\/p>\n<p>Australian high-CV coal leads gains:<\/p>\n<p>The strongest price gains were recorded in the Australian high-CV market.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle 6,000 kcal\/kg NAR physical trades were concluded at $144\/t FOB for July-loading cargoes and $149.25\/t FOB for August-loading cargoes, compared with levels around $128-130\/t in late May.<\/p>\n<p>Bids were heard as high as $149.50\/t while offers extended toward $154\/t, reflecting growing concern over near-term supply availability and stronger competition for prompt cargoes.<\/p>\n<p>The rally has helped lift sentiment across the broader seaborne market, although liquidity remains limited.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian uncertainty remains the dominant driver:<\/p>\n<p>The most significant factor supporting Asian coal prices continues to be uncertainty surrounding Indonesia&#8217;s new export administration framework.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants report that miners remain reluctant to commit forward volumes while awaiting greater clarity on the country&#8217;s evolving export system. Producers are also maintaining firm offers amid expectations that tighter supply conditions could support higher prices later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, sellers have shown little willingness to lower prices despite relatively cautious buying interest.<\/p>\n<p>For 4,200 kcal\/kg GAR coal, offers were heard at around $70-72\/t FOB for June-July loading cargoes, while bids remained closer to $67-70\/t, illustrating the persistent gap between buyer and seller expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The market is increasingly characterised by a standoff: sellers are holding cargoes in anticipation of stronger returns, while buyers remain reluctant to chase prices higher.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to concerns, as per data maintained by BigMint Indonesia&#8217;s coal exports during January-May 2026 declined 6.5% y-o-y to 137.77 million tonnes (mnt), highlighting the tightening supply backdrop that has supported prices throughout the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>China supports sentiment but buying becomes less aggressive:<\/p>\n<p>China remains the key source of demand support, but market participants caution against overstating its influence. Early summer temperatures and rising electricity demand have supported coal-fired generation requirements.<\/p>\n<p>However, Chinese buying activity has become less aggressive compared with earlier expectations, with several traders noting that the focus has shifted from supply security to the sustainability of summer demand.<\/p>\n<p>Coal inventories at major Chinese ports remain healthy, while congestion at several terminals continues to limit urgency among buyers.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese domestic prices have nevertheless strengthened. The Qinhuangdao 5,500 kcal\/kg NAR FOB marker rose to approximately Yuan 675\/t ($ 99.8\/t) during the week, while tender activity remained active across multiple grades.<\/p>\n<p>The key question for the market is whether summer demand ultimately proves strong enough to justify current price levels.<\/p>\n<p>India remains largely absent<\/p>\n<p>India continues to be the notable missing buyer in the Asian market.<\/p>\n<p>Coal stocks at Indian power plants remain comfortable, while domestic coal availability has improved significantly compared with previous years. At the same time, elevated import costs and currency pressures have reduced the attractiveness of imported coal.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants reported that many utilities and industrial consumers are increasingly relying on domestic coal supplies, limiting spot demand for seaborne cargoes.<\/p>\n<p>Although some coastal power plants may undertake limited pre-monsoon stocking, overall buying interest remains subdued.<\/p>\n<p>This absence of Indian demand is preventing the current rally from evolving into a broader regional upswing.<\/p>\n<p>Russian coal benefits from Indonesian uncertainty:<\/p>\n<p>The uncertainty surrounding Indonesian exports is also creating opportunities for alternative suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants report steady inquiries for Russian high-calorific-value coal from China and South Korea, with some buyers evaluating Russian cargoes as a substitute for Indonesian material.<\/p>\n<p>Indicative bids for Russian 6,000 kcal\/kg NAR coal into China were heard around $128-129\/t CFR for July-August delivery.<\/p>\n<p>While Russian coal is unlikely to replace Indonesian low-CV material directly, it is increasingly emerging as a beneficiary of the uncertainty surrounding future Indonesian supply.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa remains rangebound:<\/p>\n<p>South African coal prices remained comparatively stable.<\/p>\n<p>FOB Richards Bay 5,500 kcal\/kg NAR was assessed at $98.5\/t on 5 June, supported by firm seller offers but constrained by weak buying interest from India.<\/p>\n<p>With Indian buyers largely absent and freight costs remaining elevated, market participants report limited appetite for additional South African cargoes.<\/p>\n<p>Outlook:<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian export uncertainty, firm producer discipline, and tightening availability supported prices across the region. China remains supportive, but buying activity is no longer accelerating, and inventories remain comfortable. India&#8217;s continued absence is particularly important. Without meaningful Indian participation, the current rally lacks the broad-based demand foundation typically associated with sustained price increases.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the market remains firm. However, the principal risk to the bullish outlook lies in China.
