Brazil full-back Wesley has been ruled out of the World Cup with a thigh injury. Midfielder Ederson has been called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad instead. The 26-year-old has been playing for Atalanta in Italy since 2022. Brazil beat Egypt 2-1 in their final warm-up match before the World Cup on Sunday morning (June 7). Wesley was forced off after 15 minutes with a thigh injury. After tests, scans revealed the 22-year-old has a serious injury, which has ruled him out of the World Cup.
\nThe Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed Wesley’s injury in a statement. It said: “The MRI scan has revealed a tear in the adductor muscle of Wesley’s left thigh. The CBF is disappointed by this injury. Wesley is a very popular player with everyone in the team. He will always be part of this team as they continue their quest for a sixth World Cup.”
\nMeanwhile, the news came as a complete surprise to Ederson, who was named in the World Cup squad due to Wesley’s injury. When his name was announced, he was on holiday with his family in Campo Grande, the capital of his home state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The night before, he had attended the wedding of his teammate Romulo, who plays for Mexican club Tigres UANL.
\nEderson has so far played three games for the national team. He last played in a Brazil jersey in March 2025. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has expressed concern about Wesley’s injury.
