A court has sentenced Sohel Rana and Swapna Khatun, accused in the case of brutally killing an eight-year-old child after raping him in Pallabi, Mirpur. Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal Judge Masrur Salekin announced the verdict on Sunday (June 7).
\nDuring the verdict announcement, Sohel Rana, the main accused in the case, was brought to the Dhaka court from Keraniganj Central Jail and his wife Swapna Akhter from Kashimpur Central Jail this morning. Earlier, the court had fixed the date for the verdict announcement today after presenting the arguments in the case on Thursday (June 4).
\nAccording to the case, Ramisa was a second-grade student of Popular Model High School. When she left home around 9:30 am on May 19, Swapna took her to her room. At around 10:30 am that day, her mother started looking for her to drop Ramisa to school. At one point, they found the child’s shoes in front of the accused’s house.
\nAfter knocking on the door and getting no response, Ramisa’s parents and other residents of the building broke down the door and entered the accused’s house. There, they found the child’s dismembered body. Then, after receiving information through the national emergency service 999, the police went to the spot and took Swapna into custody. Later, Sohel Rana was arrested in front of the Fatullah police station in Narayanganj with the help of information technology.
\nOn May 20, Ramisa’s father Abdul Hannan Mollah filed a case in this incident with Pallabi police station. Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter were accused in the case. Later, the police arrested them. On May 20, the main accused in the case, Sohel Rana (30), confessed to the crime and gave a statement in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid. On the same day, the court ordered the imprisonment of Sohel’s wife Swapna Akhter (26).
\nAfter the investigation, on May 24, the investigating officer of the case and SI of Pallabi Police Station Ahiduzzaman submitted a charge sheet against them in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque. On the same day, Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal took cognizance of the charge sheet. On June 1, Judge Masrur Salekin framed charges against the accused. Out of the 18 witnesses included in the charge sheet of the case, 16 testified before the tribunal.
