Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that no more fascism, dictatorship should use police members against the freedom of the country and the people. Let us stand on this ground stained with the blood of the police in the first hour of independence and take a new oath today. He said these things in his speech at the inaugural ceremony organized on the occasion of ‘Police Week-2026’ at the Police Lines in Rajarbagh in the capital on Sunday (May 10).
\nTarique Rahman said, “We have all enjoyed your colorful parade so far in a joyful arrangement. To me, it did not seem like just a formality, but rather it was an expression of the discipline, self-respect, sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment of the police members to move forward with firm steps towards a beautiful future.”
\nThe Prime Minister said that the current government formed by popular vote after the bloody mass uprising of students and people in 2024 in continuation of the anti-fascist movement and struggle that has been going on for more than a decade and a half is a reflection of the aspirations of the freedom-loving, democracy-loving people of the country. The people, who have been victims of numerous attacks and cases for years, oppressed and deprived, want peace and security under the current democratic government. Ensuring the peace and security of the people of the country depends most on your activities, that is, on the role of the police.
\nAddressing the police members, the BNP Chairman said, “You will try with all your might and ability to ensure the security of the lives and properties of the people. This is the government’s expectation from you.”
\nHe said that the 13th National Parliament election has proven that the Bangladesh Police is capable of performing its duties with efficiency and professionalism. Not only in the country, but also in the peacekeeping operations of the United Nations, Bangladesh Police is working with efficiency and reputation. Our police members have set a shining example of professionalism, courage and humanity in establishing peace, maintaining law and order and protecting human rights in different countries of the world. The role of women police members in the UN peacekeeping mission has also been internationally praised.
\nThe Prime Minister further commented that humane behavior is expected from the police not only abroad but also by the people of the country.
\nTariq Rahman said, on the one hand, Major Zia’s ‘Amra Bidho’ in Chittagong for the independence of Bangladesh, and on the other hand, the life-and-death resistance of the Rajarbagh police in Dhaka. After that, there was no chance for the freedom-loving people of Bangladesh to lag behind in the freedom struggle. However, from the generation during the Liberation War to today, that is, the post-Liberation War generation, those of us who have read history or heard the direct experiences of the heroic freedom fighters and learned about the Liberation War, may still have some questions in their minds about the history during the Liberation War.
\nHe said, “In that turbulent March of 1971, when the minds of the freedom fighters were full of excitement, when thousands of soldiers from the then West Pakistan were gathering in Dhaka every day, what was the logic or strategy of the then political leadership behind keeping all the police members together at the Rajarbagh police line?
