The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the nomination paper of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) leader Nusrat Tabassum for submitting her nomination paper after the stipulated time. Earlier, the EC had suspended the candidacy of the same party’s joint convener Monira Sharmin. She has been given time till 12 noon on Thursday to submit the necessary proof of resignation from government service.
\nThe last day to submit nomination papers to participate in the elections for the reserved women’s seat of the 13th National Parliament to be held on May 12 was yesterday, Tuesday. According to Election Commission sources, the last date for submitting nomination papers was yesterday, 4 pm. But NCP leader Nusrat Tabassum submitted her nomination paper at 4:19 pm. The commission has rejected her nomination paper for submitting her nomination paper after the stipulated time.
\nMeanwhile, the nomination papers of NCP joint convener Monira Sharmin have been submitted but are stuck due to legal complications. Her nomination papers have been suspended under the disqualification clause of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972.
\nAccording to Section 12(1)(f) of the RPO, no one is eligible to become a member of parliament unless three years have passed since he resigned or retired from any government or statutory body. According to the information received, Monira Sharmin joined Bangladesh Krishi Bank in November 2023 and left his job last December. That is, only four months have passed since he left his job.
\nAfter scrutinizing the nomination papers yesterday afternoon, the Returning Officer said that out of the 13 nominations of the 11-party alliance for the 50 reserved women’s seats, 12 have been initially accepted.
