According to Al Jazeera, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government \u201cstrongly believes\u201d that the ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran should apply to Lebanon too. Speaking to reporters in Brisbane, he said the ceasefire was \u201can important step forward\u201d. But it is still a \u201cfragile peace\u201d and he wants to turn it into a lasting agreement.
\nHe added that \u201cmany Australians are concerned about what is happening in Lebanon. It will have an impact not just on that country but on the whole world.\u201d On the other hand, journalist and Ate Media co-founder John Fran has criticised the Australian government\u2019s response. He said the Australian government\u2019s \u201cindifferent\u201d response to the recent \u201cmassacre\u201d of Lebanese civilians was regrettable but not unexpected.
\n\u201cIf this had happened to the Western world\u2014Americans, Australians, British or Europeans\u2014would we have talked about the price of fuel, or would we have said clearly that it was cruel and inhumane?\u201d he asked. Earlier, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Lebanon but did not directly condemn the Israeli attack. Similarly, Prime Minister Albanese has also spoken about including Lebanon in the ceasefire, but has not elaborated on this. Jan Fran also commented on this \u201capparent lack of concern\u201d from Australian political leaders and the media. As a Lebanese-Australian, he said it was very painful for him. \u201cIt is truly tragic to see a beautiful country destroyed in front of the whole world,\u201d he said.
