Dhaka and Delhi held fruitful meetings during Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s first visit to India. Both sides expressed their determination to work together in the future in the field of regional cooperation and security, in addition to advancing bilateral relations. \nForeign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman met Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Oil and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri in New Delhi on Wednesday (April 8). Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah were present in these meetings. Earlier, after reaching Delhi, he also met the country’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Tuesday evening.
\nThe Foreign Minister reiterated the \u2018Bangladesh First\u2019 policy and the pursuit of a foreign policy based on mutual trust, respect and mutual benefit. India also attached importance to strengthening various aspects of bilateral relations, especially trade, energy, connectivity and people-to-people ties. In addition, the two sides exchanged detailed views on the regional and global situation. However, the main goal now is to take the mutually respectful relations of the two countries to new heights.
\nDuring the discussions, both sides gave special importance to taking forward the bilateral relations of the two countries in various fields. Dr. Khalilur Rahman said that the newly elected BNP government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will follow the \u2018Bangladesh First\u2019 policy and a foreign policy based on mutual trust, respect and mutual benefit.
\nDr. Khalilur Rahman thanked the Indian government for arresting the suspected killers of Shaheed Osman Hadi. Later, during the discussions on this issue, both sides agreed that the arrested persons would be sent back to Bangladesh as per the procedure stipulated in the extradition treaty between the two countries.
\nBangladesh has reiterated its request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and her Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal, to Bangladesh. During the discussions, Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that Indian visas, especially medical and business visas, will be made easier for Bangladeshis in the coming weeks. Dr. Khalilur Rahman thanked Minister Hardeep Puri for the recent supply of diesel to Bangladesh from India and requested to increase the supply of diesel and fertilizer. Minister Puri indicated that the Indian government would consider the request positively. Meanwhile, Indian media and diplomatic sources reported that the meeting focused on energy cooperation. Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman thanked Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dr. Hardeep Singh Puri for the recent supply of diesel to Bangladesh. At the same time, he requested for further increase in diesel supply considering future demand and increase in supply of fertilizers used in the agricultural sector. In response, the Indian minister assured that the Indian government would consider these requests positively. According to diplomatic sources, this potential cooperation in fuel and fertilizer supply could have a direct impact on Bangladesh’s economy and agricultural production. On the other hand, the foreign ministers of the two countries stressed the need to further strengthen the overall progress of bilateral relations. The need to enhance cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, security and people-to-people contacts was highlighted. In addition, both sides agreed to continue regular discussions and dialogue on important regional and international issues.
