The leaders of the women’s wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have said that the footsteps of a new fascism are being heard as the culture of snatching women from their homes in the middle of the night is returning. They strongly condemned the arrest of Sawda Sumi in Bhola and termed it an evil process of reviving old fascism.
\nThey made these remarks at a human chain organized by the women’s wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in front of the National Press Club in the capital today, Wednesday (April 8). Fatima Akhter Happy, a member of the organization’s executive committee, said that the conscious young generation will resist those who want to bring back a new authoritarian system in the country. If the case filed against Sawda Sumi is not withdrawn immediately, a new and tough movement will start on the streets.
\nExpressing deep concern over the arrest of Sawda Sumi, the organization’s Law and Human Rights Secretary Sabikunnahar Munni said that the footsteps of a new fascism are being heard through Sawda Sumi’s arrest. He alleged that although the current government claims the constitution in words, in reality they are following the path of a declining authoritarian government.
\nHe said that by denying the spirit of the July Revolution and the July Charter, the freedom of speech of the people has been threatened, which in a sense is tantamount to degrading the dignity of women. He pledged to strictly prevent any kind of attack or naked interference on women.
\nJamaat’s Women’s Wing Secretary General Nurunnesa Siddique criticized the government and said that the current administration is denying the demand for a referendum, which is proof of their isolation from the people. She demanded an immediate end to the culture of taking women from their homes at midnight.
\nShe said that those who want to repeat history without heeding the will of the people, the common people will throw them in the dustbin of history.
