The court has granted an application to show former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in two more murder cases of the anti-discrimination student movement. One of the two cases is in the capital’s Jatrabari and the other in Adabar police station.
\nThe judge gave this order in view of the arrest applications filed in these cases by Adabar and Jatrabari police stations at the CMM court in Dhaka on Monday (March 30). State lawyer Omar Faruk Faruki confirmed this information to the media.
\nOn March 10, the investigating officer in the murder case of student Md. Arif in the Jatrabari police station area, Sub-Inspector Md. Mahmudul Hasan, and on April 29, the investigating officer in the murder case of garment worker Rubel in the Adabar police station area, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Tipu Sultan, requested to show the accused Khairul arrested.
\nThis morning, Khairul Haque was brought from prison and placed in the custody of the CMM court. He was brought to the court under heavy police guard at 12:15 pm. He stood silently in the dock during the hearing.
\nFirst, the public prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruk Farooqui argued in favor of showing the arrest. While the accused’s lawyer Monayem Nabi Shahin argued against showing the arrest. After hearing the statements of both parties, the court granted the application to show him arrested. When he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared him dead. A murder case was filed in this incident on August 26, 2024 at Jatrabari Police Station.
\nThe complaint in the Rubel murder case of Adabor Police Station states that on August 5, 2024, around 11 am, several hundred students and ordinary people, including Rubel, took out a protest procession in the Ring Road area of \u200b\u200bAdabor Police Station. At that time, the police, Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League and Matsyajibi League opened fire. Garment worker Md. Rubel died of gunshot wounds. Rubel’s father Rafiqul Islam filed a case with Adabor police station on August 22. On July 24, 2025, almost a year after the fall of the Awami League government in the July coup, police arrested Khairul Haque from his house in the capital’s Dhanmondi. He was later arrested in multiple cases, including murder, during the July movement. He has been in jail since his arrest.
\nOn March 8, the High Court granted bail to Khairul Haque in four separate cases, including the verdict forgery case. On March 11, the High Court granted him bail in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (AC).
\nHis lawyer Monayem Nabi Shaheen then said that there are a total of five cases against the former chief justice. Since he has been granted bail in all of them, there is no legal obstacle to his release from prison.
