About 5 decades ago, President Ziaur Rahman himself dug the soil with a spade, walked with hundreds of people of all ages who came to the canal digging program. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also followed that historical continuity today, Monday (March 16). Kulsum Begum, a 74-year-old resident of Balrampur village in Dinajpur, said this.
\nShe said, ‘Tareq Rahman is our sister’s son. Khaleda Zia is our sister. Her son Tarique Rahman. Now the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Like his father, his son is also cutting canals. Shaheed Zia used to join the canal cutting program with people as volunteers.’
\nKulsum Begum said, ‘The Sahapara Canal in Balrampur. When you look at this canal, it seems that it is not a canal, but a large and uneven pile of soil, the water in the canal has dried up. When the monsoon comes, the water flow of this canal is not seen that way.’ As a result, waterlogging is created. Housewife Shiuli Khatun said, “We are not well. Sahapara canal is a source of sorrow for us. Tarique Rahman has come, maybe this time the canal will be re-dug to ease our sorrow.”
\nRamchandrapur union of Balrapur is located west of Dinajpur. The 12-kilometer-long Sahapara canal merges with the Punarbhaba river, the main river of the district. The water flow of this river, coming from West Bengal, India, enters Dinajpur via Thakurgaon, which merges with the Mahananda river at Panchagarh.
\nThe people of this area are excited because Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is coming to Kaharol area. The distance to Balrapur is 12\/13 kilometers through a narrow road. Rural housewives, from children to teenagers, came out of their houses and stood on the roadside to see the Prime Minister from afar. Many waved and greeted him.
\nAl Amin, a secondary school student, said, “If the Sahapara canal is dug again, there will be no more waterlogging here. If water is stored in this canal, fish can be cultivated, and if trees are planted on both banks of the canal, there will be beautiful afforestation.” Anit, who came to dig the canal, said, “Today is a happy day for us. The leader is coming, I cannot express the joy in our hearts.” “Look how many of us are there? This is our joy, this is our pride.
