A powerful blizzard and record snowfall that hit the East Coast of the United States have brought public life to a standstill. Millions of people are facing extreme hardship. The disaster has been ongoing since Monday (February 23) so far.
\nIn addition, another 2,000 flights are expected to be canceled today, Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, up to 37 inches (94 centimeters) of snow was recorded in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Even New York City’s Central Park received more than 19 inches of snow. Due to the disastrous weather, transportation in several states, including New York, has become almost impossible.
\nAbout 600,000 homes and businesses across the East Coast have lost power, with New Jersey and Massachusetts being the worst hit. The intensity of the snowfall was so great that the previous record of 36 inches of snow in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, was broken in 1978. Meteorologists called the situation “terrible”. For safety reasons, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts have banned all non-essential travel. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy warned residents, saying, “The roads are extremely dangerous due to the whiteout or heavy snowstorm, so everyone should stay indoors.” The storm has also caused unprecedented disruption to air travel. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, 98 percent of flights at New York’s La Guardia Airport and 91 percent at JFK Airport have been canceled.
