West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently criticised India’s Election Commission and gave the example of peaceful elections in Bangladesh. She said that there was a fear of violence in the Bangladesh elections, but the elections were conducted peacefully. Compared to Bangladesh, the Election Commission is making the voting process more complicated in India and is harming democracy. She believes that this situation needs to be changed urgently.
\nThe Chief Minister also alleged that India’s Election Commission is creating a ‘threat culture’ and destroying democracy. She said that such a situation did not happen even in a monarchy and that the Commission has now become a ‘super Tughlaqi’ or ‘super Hitler’. Mamata Banerjee has long been vocal about the SIR process in West Bengal; she claimed that the commission is not following the right procedure and is working in favour of the BJP. She has also approached the Supreme Court to protect voting rights.
