Pakistan is joining the ‘Peace Board’ or ‘Peace Council’ working towards rebuilding Gaza and establishing lasting peace. Pakistan has accepted an invitation to join the initiative announced by US President Donald Trump, along with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia and Qatar.
\nPakistan and Turkey have formally announced their decision to join the ‘Peace Board’. US President Donald Trump has invited Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Turkish President Erdogan to participate in the initiative.
\nAccording to the Foreign Office of Pakistan, participation in the ‘Peace Board’ is part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to implement the Gaza Peace Plan. The plan was adopted in light of UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
\nThe Foreign Office said that Pakistan hopes that this new framework will lead to tangible progress towards a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
\nAt the same time, Pakistan hopes that the initiative will significantly increase humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people. The urgent need for comprehensive reconstruction of Gaza after months of horrific devastation was also emphasized.
\nSupport for Palestinian self-determination
\nPakistan’s Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s principled position on the Palestinian issue. The statement said that Islamabad hopes that these initiatives will pave the way for the realization of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination through a credible and time-bound political process based on international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions.
\nPakistan reiterated its support for the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine on the basis of the pre-1967 borders. The Foreign Office said that Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) will be the capital of that state.
