Two consecutive earthquakes were felt in the northeastern part of the country, including Sylhet, in the middle of the night. The first earthquake was felt at 4:47:39 am today, Monday (January 5). Just 30 seconds later, at 4:47:52 am, the second earthquake shook Sylhet and surrounding areas. The tremors of this earthquake were felt in Bangladesh as well as in the Indian state of Assam. Mustafa Kamal Palash, a meteorology and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, confirmed the occurrence of two consecutive earthquakes.
\nIn his Facebook post at 6 am today, he said that not one, but two earthquakes occurred in the morning. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2 and the second had a magnitude of 5.4. The second earthquake occurred in the Indian state of Assam. He also said that the origin of the two earthquakes was in the Morigaon area near Guwahati, the capital of the Indian state of Assam. According to information received from the American Geological Survey, the epicenter of the two earthquakes was about 35 kilometers below the surface.
\nMostafa Kamal Palash said the 5.4 magnitude earthquake is a moderate earthquake. As a result, there is a possibility of aftershocks in the next 48 hours. He warned that aftershocks may be felt inside Bangladesh or on any active fault lines in the northern and eastern parts of the country. So far, no damage has been reported in the earthquake.
