The government has issued a notification declaring three days of state mourning from Wednesday to Friday (December 31 and January 1 and 2) on the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. A notification in this regard was issued by the Cabinet Division today, Tuesday (December 30).
\nIt said that Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time former Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has passed away while undergoing treatment (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). The interim government is deeply saddened by the death of the uncompromising leader of the democracy restoration movement. The government has decided that state mourning will be observed on her death from Wednesday, December 31, 2025 to Friday, January 2, 2026.
\nIt said that as a state mourning program, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions and educational institutions of Bangladesh and in all government and private buildings and Bangladesh missions abroad for these three days.
\nThe notification also said that on Friday, January 2, 2026, special prayers will be held in all mosques of Bangladesh for the forgiveness of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Special prayers will also be organized in other religious institutions for the peace of her soul.
\nEarlier, in his address to the nation at noon, the Chief Advisor declared three days of state mourning from Wednesday to Friday (December 31 and January 1 and 2) on the death of Khaleda Zia.
