Delhi has summoned Bangladeshi High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah. In addition, the neighboring country has lodged a formal diplomatic protest over the recent threats to the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka and the anti-India provocative statements made by Bangladeshi political figures. He was summoned to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday (December 17) afternoon. Earlier, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday (December 15). Two days later, the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Delhi was summoned.
\nIt is believed that the summons have been issued in the wake of recent comments by Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and one of the leaders of the student-led movement that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government. Speaking at a rally in Dhaka, Hasnat Abdullah warned that Bangladesh could harbour \u201cseparatist and anti-India forces\u201d and \u201cdisconnect\u201d India\u2019s northeastern states, often known as the \u201cSeven Sisters,\u201d from the rest of the country.
\nEarlier this week, an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was burned during protests, further escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
