A Supreme Court tribunal sentenced Cuba’s former finance minister Alejandro Gil to life in prison on Monday (December 8) after finding him guilty of multiple corruption charges. British news agency Reuters reported this information in a report.
\nThe court statement said that he abused his power to gain personal advantage through espionage and fraudulent activities. He also received money from foreign companies and bribed other government officials to legalize the acquisition of wealth.
\nFormer finance minister Gil was once a close ally of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and launched major economic reforms in 2021. However, these reforms did not last long. Gil has not been seen again since being dismissed by Diaz-Canel in February 2024.
\nThe court’s decision is being seen as a strong message against high-level corruption and violations of state policy in Cuba. The life sentence of the former finance minister has brought Cuba’s political and economic landscape into fresh focus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
