Bangladesh has again sent a letter to India to bring back ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. The letter reached the Indian Ministry of External Affairs from the Bangladesh Mission in Delhi on Friday.
\nForeign Affairs Advisor Md. Towhid Hossain confirmed the matter on Sunday (November 23). He said that the reply to the letter sent earlier to bring back Sheikh Hasina has not yet come. But now the situation is different. The sentence has been implemented. As per the existing agreement between India and Bangladesh, a letter has been officially sent again to bring her back.
\nSheikh Hasina and Kamal moved to India after being ousted from power following a mass uprising in July last year. A case was filed against them on charges of crimes against humanity. The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced them to death on November 17. Immediately after the verdict, Dhaka called for their extradition to Delhi.
\nThe Ministry of External Affairs has said that it would be highly undesirable and a travesty of justice to grant asylum to these individuals convicted of crimes against humanity to any other country. According to the existing Bangladesh-India extradition treaty, it is India’s duty to hand over the convicted individuals to the Bangladeshi authorities. Political analysts believe that this step is not only an effort to ensure justice, but also important in terms of diplomatic relations between the two countries and fulfilling international obligations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
