The Israeli parliament (Knesset) has approved a bill to execute Palestinian prisoners, the Israel Broadcasting Authority (KAN) reported. The vote was held on Monday night (November 10) with 39 out of 120 members voting in favor and 16 against, KAN reported.
\nDuring the session, heated arguments broke out between Arab lawmaker Ayman Odeh and far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir, which almost escalated into a fight. The law was proposed by the far-right Jewish Power party, led by Ben-Gavir. Before the vote, the bill was sent to various Knesset committees to prepare for second and third readings.
\nThe draft law states, \u201cAnyone who intentionally or recklessly kills an Israeli citizen \u2014 if it is done out of racism, hatred or the intention to harm Israel \u2014 shall be sentenced to death.\u201d Once the sentence is announced, there will be no possibility of commutation.
\nFollowing Ben-Gavir\u2019s vote, US social media user X wrote with joy, \u201cJewish power has made history. We promised and we have fulfilled it. The law on the death penalty for terrorists has passed its first reading.\u201d
\nHuman rights organizations have long condemned Ben-Gavir\u2019s initiative. According to them, the law is primarily aimed at Palestinians and will deepen the discrimination of the Israeli regime. According to Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations, more than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are currently held in Israeli prisons. The prisoners are subjected to torture, starvation and medical neglect, many of which have lost their lives.
