UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the situation in Sudan’s civil war is spiraling out of control. He also called for an end to fighting and violence. Meanwhile, at least 40 people were killed in an attack on a funeral in the country’s Kordofan region, The Guardian and Al Jazeera reported. Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) recently captured El Fasher in Darfur after a nearly 18-month siege.
\nThe two-year civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF is one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. More than 150,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million have been displaced from their homes. Prosecutors for the International Criminal Court said on Monday that they were gathering evidence of genocide, rape and other crimes in El Fasher.
\n“Sudan’s dire crisis… is spiraling out of control,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the World Social Summit in Qatar. He called on the warring parties to come to the negotiating table and take immediate steps to end the violence. The UN’s humanitarian office, OCHA, did not specify when the attack in Kordofan region took place or who was behind it. However, the agency said the security situation in Kordofan region continued to deteriorate.
