Democratic candidate Zohrab Mamdani has been elected as the 111th mayor of New York City. He made history by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. He becomes New York City’s first Muslim mayor. The 34-year-old Democratic socialist and state assemblyman from Queens won with more than 50% of the vote. Cuomo came in second with more than 40% of the vote, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received 7% more votes.
\nDemocrats across the country are celebrating Mamdani’s historic victory. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger became the first female governor in Virginia, and in New Jersey, Mickie Sherrill defeated a Trump-backed gubernatorial candidate. Mamdani\u2019s election night crowd at Brooklyn\u2019s Paramount Center erupted in cheers after his victory was announced. They hugged and cheered. In addition to becoming New York City\u2019s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani is the first South Asian and the youngest mayor in a century.
