The Grand Egyptian Museum or GEM has officially opened near Egypt’s ‘The Great Pyramid of Khufur’, one of the seventh wonders of the ancient world. It is being called the world’s largest archaeological museum, where more than one lakh artifacts are preserved. This information has been revealed from a report by the British media BBC.
\nAbout seven thousand years of history from the pre-dynastic period to the Greek and Roman eras have been taken place there. Famous Egyptologists say that the opening of this museum will strengthen the demand for the return of Egyptian artifacts from other countries. This includes the ‘Rosetta Stone’ to the British Museum.
\nThe most talked about thing at the Grand Egyptian Museum is the simultaneous display of the entire collection found from the intact tomb of the boy emperor of ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun. It is being displayed for the first time since it was discovered by the British Egyptologist Howard Carter. The entire collection includes all of Tutankhamun’s valuables, including his spectacular gold mask, throne and chariot.
\n“I had to think about how to present it differently,” said Dr. Tarek Tawfiq, president of the International Egyptology Association and former head of the Grand Egyptian Museum. “Because more than 1,800 of the 5,500 objects in the tomb have been on display since it was discovered in 1922,” he said. “My idea was to display the entire tomb collection. That is, nothing will be in a warehouse or in another museum. So that you can see it the way Howard Carter found it a hundred years ago.”
\nThe museum, built at a cost of about $1.2 billion, is expected to see at least eight million visitors a year. It is expected to boost tourism in Egypt. Most of the gallery’s exhibits, except for the Tutankhamun exhibition and Khufu’s 4,500-year-old tomb boat, have been open to the public since last year.
\nThe new museum covers an area of \u200b\u200babout 500,000 square meters, the size of 70 football fields. The walls are engraved with ancient Egyptian writings. The alabaster stone has a triangular design and the entrance is shaped like a pyramid. The museum’s most famous feature is a 3,200-year-old, 11-meter-high statue of the pharaoh (emperor) Ramesses the Great. It was moved to the new location from Cairo Railway Station in 2006. The statues of ancient kings and queens are located along a grand staircase, and the pyramids of Giza can be seen from large windows on the upper floor. The new museum was proposed in 1992.
