Leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami met with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus to discuss the overall preparations for the upcoming general elections and various steps taken by the government.
\nIn a separate meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday (October 22), the NCP and Jamaat leaders also discussed the implementation mechanism of the July Charter, the referendum and the roadmap for the trial of the July massacre.
\nThe Chief Advisor assured both parties that the interim government will take all necessary steps to make the upcoming national elections neutral and fair. He sought the cooperation of all active political parties, including Jamaat and NCP, to make the elections peaceful and festive.
\nWhile talking to the Jamaat leaders, the Chief Advisor said, “You can be assured of our neutrality. We have already taken various steps to organize a free, fair and impartial election; you will see many more initiatives ahead.”
\nFirst, a four-member delegation of the party led by NCP convener Nahid Islam met the chief advisor. The other members of the NCP delegation were the party’s chief organizer for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, senior joint convener Samanta Sharmin and joint convener Khaled Saifullah.
\nThen, a four-member delegation of the party led by Jamaat Nayebe Ameer Dr. Syed Mohammad Abdullah Taher met the chief advisor. The other members were Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Ghulam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General ATM Masum and Rafiqul Islam Khan. From the government side, Planning Advisor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul and Industries Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan were present in both the meetings.
\nNahid Islam said in the meeting, “We want a roadmap for the trial of the July killings and assurance of justice.” “Implement the July Charter before the elections. The government must take firm steps in this regard.” At that time, the chief advisor urged the NCP to sign the July Charter and said, “This charter is a valuable asset for the nation; “Everyone’s participation is important here.”
\nThe chief advisor assured the NCP that the National Consensus Commission is working on the modalities for implementing the charter. Nahid Islam informed the chief advisor that the NCP has already sent a letter to the commission for discussion with legal experts involved in the Consensus Commission.
\nAfter the meeting with the NCP, Jamaat leaders met the chief advisor. They demanded a referendum on the July charter before the national elections. In the meeting, Dr. Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, “It is necessary to hold a referendum before the national elections because the July charter contains many issues related to the national elections.”
\nHe also said, “If the referendum is held on the same day as the national elections, there is a risk of prolonging the voting process.” The party leaders also said that Jamaat has full confidence in any decision of the chief advisor in the interest of ensuring the impartiality of the election administration.
