French President Emmanuel Macron will appoint a new prime minister within the next 48 hours in a country wracked by political instability.
\nA senior official at the Elysee Presidential Palace, the official residence and office of the French president, confirmed the information to Reuters on Wednesday (October 8).
\nHe said that most lawmakers are against dissolving parliament. They want stability. A new budget is due to be adopted by December 31. For this, stability in parliament is first needed.
\nTherefore, the president has decided to appoint a new prime minister after considering all aspects. The decision will be implemented within the next 48 hours.
\nFrench Prime Minister Sebastien Le Corbusier resigned on October 6. The politician, known as a loyal follower of Macron, is now the country’s caretaker prime minister. He will resign if a new prime minister is appointed.
\nThe French public and opposition parties have recently become angry with the government over the national budget cuts. In early September, the French cabinet passed a bill to cut public spending on welfare and public-interest sectors to ease the debt-ridden French government; as part of the budget reform, a total of $44 billion was cut from state spending across sectors.
\nThis angered the French public. Taking note of the public outcry, opposition lawmakers challenged Le Corneaux’s predecessor, Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou, to a vote of confidence in parliament. Bayrou lost the vote and resigned on September 8. Macron appointed Le Corneaux as the new prime minister within 24 hours of his resignation.
\nBut the situation did not improve after Le Corneaux’s arrival. France’s far-left political parties and trade unions continued to announce one program after another.
