An elderly man threw a shoe at Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai during a hearing of a case in the Supreme Court of India.
\nThe shoe was thrown shortly after the first hearing of the Chief Justice’s bench began this Monday (October 6) morning. The person who threw the shoe was immediately taken into security custody.
\nAfter such a surprising incident in the courtroom, the Chief Justice continued the hearing as usual.
\nEyewitnesses said that soon after the first hearing of the day began, the man raised slogans like ‘Bharat will not tolerate insult to Sanatan’ and threw a shoe at the bench.
\nSecurity personnel immediately rushed to the courtroom and removed the shoe-thrower. The shoe he threw did not hit the Chief Justice.
\nThe ‘proximity card’ or admit card held by this person is usually given to Supreme Court lawyers and clerks.
\nThe name on this ‘proximity card’ is Kishore Rakesh. It is not known why he threw the shoe at the Chief Justice. He is reportedly being questioned by security officials.
\nA lawyer present in the courtroom at the time of the incident said that the Chief Justice’s reaction to the shoe-throwing incident was calm.
\nSenior lawyers have demanded a full investigation into the incident. They say that such an attack on the Supreme Court of India is completely unjustified and unacceptable. All the judges of the Supreme Court should condemn the incident together and issue a joint statement in the media saying that the court will not tolerate ideological attacks.
\nIn a post on Exe, senior lawyer Indira Jaising said that Chief Justice Gavai clearly continued his judicial work without any hindrance to maintain the dignity of the court.
\nGavai had recently faced widespread criticism on social media for his comments on the Hindu god Vishnu.
\nAfter refusing to take up a public interest litigation seeking judicial intervention in the reconstruction of the 7-foot-tall Vishnu idol at Khajuraho, the Chief Justice had said, “Go and ask God to do something for you.” His comments have drawn criticism. Many say that the Chief Justice has insulted the followers of Vishnu by making such comments.
