The National Consensus Commission has already finalized the draft of the July Charter for the formation of a new Bangladesh. The commission then sent it to the political parties. However, there is disagreement among the major political parties on several important proposals related to changing the constitution, including the PR (proportional representation) system. In particular, Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the country’s major parties, wants the PR system in the upper and lower houses of parliament based on the votes obtained in the national elections. The party has announced a movement if the elections are held without PR. Jamaat-e-Islami claims that if the PR system is introduced, the people will be empowered. As a result, corruption will be reduced. The party’s Naib-e-Ameer, Professor Mujibur Rahman, said that there will be no good elections without the PR system. Therefore, we will try to implement it as far as possible. Jamaat will try with all its might.
\nAnother Naib-e-Ameer, Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, the interim government has already proposed proportional elections in the upper house. But we want the PR system in the lower house as well as the upper house. Because if PR is in the upper house instead of the lower house, it will not have much impact. Top leaders of Jamaat say that to fulfill the dream of mass uprising, reform proposals must be implemented before the elections. Therefore, the party is in favor of the Constituent Assembly elections to implement the July Charter. In this regard, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, the agreed reform proposals must be given a legal basis. The vote must be held on the basis of these reforms. If elections are held like those of the Awami League era without reforms or changes, the country will return to ignorance as before. Mujibur Rahman said, if the elections are held like those of the previous ones, the July Movement and the blood of the students will be in vain. Therefore, it will be better if elections are held after reforms. We will not back down from here. On the other hand, Jamaat’s top leaders also believe that elections will not be fair and meaningful if they are held without reforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
