Onion imports from India have resumed after being closed for four months and 20 days. In the last three days, 2,000 metric tonnes of onions have been imported through Bhomra land port in Satkhira. This has already had an impact on the market. The price of onions has dropped by up to 5 taka per kg. Bhomra Customs Revenue Officer Russell Ahmed said that onion imports from India were stopped from March 27 this year. It was mainly stopped because the Ministry of Commerce did not grant IP. Onion imports have resumed since August 17. In the last three days, 2,283 metric tonnes of onions have been imported in 75 trucks. He said that the amount will gradually increase. Meanwhile, the impact on the domestic market has started after the import started. The price of onions has dropped by 5 to 7 taka per kg in Sultanpur market in Satkhira city. Domestic onions are now being sold wholesale in the market at 64 to 67 taka per kg. Three days ago, they were sold at 72 to 74 taka. It was sold at 78 to 80 taka in the retail market, currently it is being sold at 70 to 72 taka. Indian onions are being sold at 60 taka per kg. Satkhira Agricultural Marketing Officer Saleh Mohammad Abdullah said that the market has been affected after the import of Indian onions. The price has decreased by five to seven taka per kg. If the price of domestic onions falls below 60 taka, then the farmers will suffer. We must also take care of that.
