Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has demanded that the ongoing political reform process be implemented from the time of the interim government instead of leaving it in the hands of the next elected parliament. He said this at an emergency press conference at the party office in Bangla Motor in the capital on Saturday (August 2). The press conference was organized as part of the preparations for the announcement of the ‘Manifesto of New Bangladesh’ to be held at the Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday (August 3) at 4 pm. Nahid Islam said, ‘The manifesto of new Bangladesh will outline our future plans. In continuation of this, we held the July march. I thank the participants and collaborators.’ He said, ‘The main demand of the July march was judicial reform and a new constitution. We talked about the July Declaration and the July Charter. I have heard that the July Charter will be published by all parties on August 5 – we welcome this initiative. Nahid said, “Although there is consensus on many issues of the July Charter, there are notes of dissent on some issues. The Consensus Commission has not yet informed us about these issues or the implementation method. All parties will sign the charter only when the implementation method is clear.” He also said, “We have said that the July Charter must have a legal basis and the next elections and the formation of the parliament or the Constituent Assembly must be based on that charter.
