The Appellate Division has acquitted Awami League leader Mubarak Hossain, who was sentenced to death in a case of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. On Wednesday (July 30), a 5-judge appellate bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed announced the verdict. Earlier, on Tuesday (July 22), a 5-judge appellate bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed had fixed the verdict for the day. Senior lawyer Barrister Imran Abdullah Siddique heard the case on behalf of Mubarak that day. Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim was on behalf of the prosecution. On July 8, the appeal hearing of former Awami League leader Md. Mubarak Hossain, seeking acquittal from the death sentence in a case of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, began. On November 24, 2014, former Awami League leader Md. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Mubarak Hossain to death. He was ordered to be hanged to death. The Tribunal-1, comprising Justice M. Enayetur Rahim, Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwarul Haque, announced the verdict in the case against Mubarak. Two of the five charges against him were proven. The tribunal sentenced him to death in one and life imprisonment in the other. The verdict said that Mubarak was one of the members of the Razakar force in Brahmanbaria in 1971.
