The court has granted a 7-day remand to former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in a case filed on charges of forgery in the verdict nullifying the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (CMM) granted his remand on Wednesday (July 30) morning. Earlier in the morning, the former Chief Justice was produced before the CMM court. Later, the police applied for him to be remanded for 10 days. After a stage of hearing, the court granted him a 7-day remand. The charge sheet in the case states that former Chief Justice Khairul Haque gave the verdict nullifying the 13th Amendment verdict on May 10, 2011. The verdict stated that the caretaker government system could be maintained twice more, but the judges could not be appointed to that government, an allegation made against him. The case alleges that Khairul Haque committed fraud by corruptly and maliciously agreeing to and signing the full verdict. The case statement mentions that detailed information about the verdict to repeal the Thirteenth Amendment will be available if Khairul Haque, who is in jail, is interrogated in police custody. It is worth noting that the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence on the morning of July 24.
