The United Nations is considering setting up its office in Bangladesh because the country’s human rights organizations have failed to provide accurate statistics on disappearances, murders and torture, said BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed. He made the remarks in the capital on Monday (July 28) in connection with the interim government’s decision to launch a UN Human Rights Office mission in Bangladesh. Highlighting the statistics on disappearances, murders and torture in the last 15 years, Salahuddin Ahmed said that BNP is concerned about the human rights situation in the country. Back then, no one could talk about disappearances and murders, so they were not included in the statistics. That is why the head of the human rights organization could not provide accurate statistics. In that context, the UN has considered setting up an office in Bangladesh, but the government cannot take such a decision without consulting any political party. He said the interim government should reconsider its decision to launch a human rights office mission after due diligence. BNP wants the human rights situation in the country to be upheld.
