Former President of the West African country of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has died. He died while undergoing treatment at a clinic in London, UK, on Sunday (July 13). He was 82 years old. In a post on the social media platform Xe (formerly Twitter), Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad, confirmed the news of Buhari’s death. He said that the family of former President Muhammadu Buhari announced his death this afternoon at a clinic in London. May Allah grant him a place in Jannatul Firdous, Amin. In a statement, the ruling President Bola Tinubu said that he had spoken to Buhari’s wife. In addition, he instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to go to England and oversee the formal process of returning Buhari’s body. Muhammadu Buhari first came to power as a military ruler. Later, he ruled the country as an elected democratic leader. Buhari, who ruled the country with a ‘steel-hard’ hand as a military ruler in the 1980s, has since re-emerged in politics as a transformed democrat, having radically changed his image. It is worth noting that Buhari ruled the country as a civilian, ‘democrat’ president for two consecutive terms from 2015 to 2023.
