In June, 696 people were killed and 1,867 were injured in 689 road accidents in the country. The financial cost of human capital loss is about Tk 2,463.2 billion. The Road Safety Foundation, a non-governmental organization working on road safety, gave this information in a report on Wednesday (July 2).<\/p>\n
It said that the Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on 9 national dailies, 7 online news portals, various electronic media and its own data. In June, 689 road accidents occurred in the country; 696 people were killed and 1,867 were injured. Of the fatalities, 104 were women (15.09 percent), 109 were children (15.82 percent).<\/p>\n
228 people were killed in 256 motorcycle accidents, which is 32.75 percent of the total fatalities. The motorcycle accident rate is 37.15 percent. 120 pedestrians were killed in accidents, which is 17.24 percent of the total deaths. 106 vehicle drivers and assistants were killed, or 15.22 percent. During this period, 18 boat accidents killed 21 people and injured 13. 53 rail track accidents killed 44 people and injured 25.<\/p>\n
The Road Safety Foundation’s observation and analysis shows that of the accidents, 296 (42.96 percent) occurred on national highways, 243 (35.26 percent) on regional roads, 59 (8.56 percent) on rural roads, 87 (12.62 percent) on city roads and 4 (0.58 percent) in other places.<\/p>\n
Of the accidents, 167 (24.23 percent) were head-on collisions, 306 (44.41 percent) were due to loss of control, 124 (18 percent) were due to pedestrians being crushed\/pushed, 76 (11.03 percent) were due to rear-end collisions and 16 (2.32 percent) were due to other causes. Analysis of the time of the accidents shows that the accidents occurred – 5.07 percent in the early morning, 26.26 percent in the morning, 19.44 percent in the afternoon, 20.75 percent in the afternoon, 8.85 percent in the evening and 19.59 percent at night.<\/p>\n
Division-wise accident statistics show that accidents occurred in Dhaka division 29.31 percent; fatalities 26.86 percent, accidents occurred in Rajshahi division 15.23 percent; fatalities 15.66 percent, accidents occurred in Chittagong division 17.41 percent; fatalities 16.23 percent, accidents occurred in Khulna division 10.30 percent; The death toll was 10.77 percent, accidents occurred in Barisal division in 5.95 percent; deaths in 5.60 percent, accidents occurred in Sylhet division in 3.91 percent; deaths in 3.59 percent, accidents occurred in Rangpur division in 10.44 percent; deaths in 11.35 percent and accidents occurred in Mymensingh division in 7.40 percent; deaths in 9.91 percent.<\/p>\n
The highest number of 202 accidents occurred in Dhaka division with 187 people killed. The lowest number of accidents occurred in Sylhet division with 27 accidents with 25 people killed. As a single district, Chittagong district had 29 people killed in 34 accidents. The lowest number occurred in Chapainawabganj district. In this district, 1 person was killed in 6 accidents. In the capital Dhaka, 62 (9 percent) road accidents resulted in 24 people (3.44 percent) deaths and 87 were injured.<\/p>\n
The financial value of the human resources loss caused by road accidents is around Tk 2,463.2 crore. Since much of the information on road accidents remains unpublished, an additional 30 percent must be added to this estimate. The calculation was made according to the International Road Assessment Program (IRAP) methodology.
