The High Court has dismissed the writ petition filed by BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain not to take oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has commented that the verdict is a victory for the people.<\/p>\n
He made this comment in immediate reaction to the media after the verdict was announced in the High Court on Thursday (May 22).<\/p>\n
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The High Court of Justice has given the kind of verdict that should be given with respect to the law. This is undoubtedly another victory for democracy.”<\/p>\n
He also said, “When the mayoral election was held, the fascist Awami League government forcibly took away the results. However, the people of the country, including the people of Dhaka, declared Ishraq the mayor.<\/p>\n
Calling on the Ministry of Local Government to take immediate action to administer the oath to Ishraq Hossain, Fakhrul said, “I hope that the ministry will quickly arrange for Ishraq’s oath without creating any more problems and will try to ease the situation.”<\/p>\n
Addressing the leaders and activists, he said, “Since the court has ruled on this matter, the people have won. Now, instead of blocking the roads like that, it is hoped that the government will be pleased… They will take measures to administer the oath to Ishraq. And they (leaders and activists) will move away from the roads for the people’s relief.”<\/p>\n
The BNP Secretary General said, “We are saying again that the only way to resolve the current political crisis is to announce a roadmap for elections very soon. There is no point in saying anything else here.\u2019<\/p>\n
Referring to the ongoing reform process, he said, \u2018Those who are in the National Consensus Commission will announce the issues on which the political parties have reached consensus. And the issues on which there is no consensus will be kept within the charter and kept as an ongoing process. So any exaggeration or delay in this will complicate the situation.\u2019<\/p>\n
On May 14, the BNP Secretary General went to Bangkok for an eye surgery. The next day, he underwent a successful surgery on his left eye at Bangkok\u2019s Rutnin Eye Hospital. He is currently under close observation by doctors at the hospital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
