A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck Greece, with strong tremors felt across Turkey and Israel. Although the USGS said the earthquake was 6.2. The British newspaper The Sun reported that after the earthquake, there is also a growing fear that a major tsunami could hit the islands of Crete and Santorini, which are popular with tourists.<\/p>\n
Another British newspaper, The Independent, says that the earthquake struck north of the Greek island of Crete at 8:49 am local time (5:49 GMT) on Thursday (May 22). The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center has already issued a tsunami warning. However, Greek authorities have stressed that there is no risk to life.<\/p>\n
The government has issued a national advisory asking the public to be vigilant. The national fire service is also on high alert for any casualties, major damage or rescue operations. Locals reported minor damage to roads and old buildings across Crete.<\/p>\n
State television ERT said there were no immediate reports of casualties. However, residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution after the first tremors were felt. The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 68 kilometres (42 miles).
